The short answer: problems with exported dryers are rarely problems of the machine itself. Equipment that runs well at home stops in the destination country for one of three reasons — incompatible electrical standards, damage during sea freight, or spare parts that cannot be obtained in time. All three can be settled at the quotation stage, provided the right questions are asked.
1. First gate: electrical standards
Equipment built for the Chinese market defaults to 380 V / 50 Hz / three-phase. That standard is not universal, and each item must be confirmed before shipment.
| Item | Default | Common overseas | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voltage | 380 V | 440 V / 480 V / 220 V three-phase | Motor windings, contactors and VFD selection all change |
| Frequency | 50 Hz | 60 Hz (South Korea, parts of Southeast Asia, the Americas) | Motor speed rises; fan duty and pulley ratio must be recalculated |
| Control circuit voltage | 220 V or 24 V DC | Must match local practice | Control cabinet transformer, indicator lamps, pushbuttons |
| Wiring system | Three-phase four-wire | Three-phase three-wire or other | Earthing method and earth-leakage protection |
| Ingress protection | Standard | Often higher in hot-humid regions | IP rating for motors and control cabinets, moisture protection |
On frequency: converting 50 Hz to 60 Hz is not a matter of changing the nameplate. A motor of the same rating runs about 20% faster at 60 Hz, so fan duty and shaft power change as well — and for a centrifugal fan, shaft power varies approximately with the cube of speed. The fan is the component most likely to be affected. The correct approach is to recalculate the operating point and, where necessary, fit a variable-frequency drive or change the pulley ratio.
Additional note for hot-humid regions: in permanently humid conditions the control cabinet needs anti-condensation protection, motors should be specified for hot-humid duty, and the desiccant and moisture-barrier packing applied before dispatch must not be omitted.
2. Second gate: sea freight packing
Vibration, humidity and stacking loads in international transport exceed domestic transport significantly, and the packing rules differ.
- Main equipment: fumigation-free wooden cases or frame crates. Long drum shells are often shipped bare with timber bracing, but connections, flanges and bearing housings must be protected
- Moisture protection is the priority: container interiors experience large day-night temperature swings at sea and condensation forms. Wrap critical areas in moisture-barrier film, include desiccant, seal electrical components separately, and apply rust protection to finished surfaces
- Removable parts in separate cases: fans, control cabinets, motors and feeders packed separately, marked with numbers and orientation, together with a packing list and assembly drawings for site assembly
- Container loading calculated in advance: the internal dimensions of a 40 ft high-cube and a 20 ft general purpose container differ substantially, and drum length directly determines whether and how the machine fits. The loading plan should be produced at the quotation stage, not discovered at the dock
- Lifting points marked: lifting gear at the destination may differ from what is used domestically, so the centre of gravity and lifting positions must be marked on the packing
3. Third gate: spare parts and support
The worst outcome for an overseas machine is not a breakdown — it is waiting for the part. With sea freight and customs clearance, a single bearing can take a month.
| Category | Recommended items |
|---|---|
| Drive train | Bearings, coupling inserts, belts / chains |
| Seals | Shaft seals, flange gaskets |
| Fan | Impeller (high-wear duty), bearings |
| Electrical | Contactors, relays, fuses, indicator lamps, VFD spare boards |
| Electric heating | Heating elements (for electric heating machines) |
| Tools | Special spanners and assembly tools |
How much to send: base the first order on one year of wear-part consumption, and err on the generous side — the freight on a first consignment is far lower than a later emergency shipment.
Commissioning: export projects generally use one of two approaches — remote guidance (video, drawings and parameter tables, suitable for simpler machines), or sending an engineer to site (suitable for complete systems or first production). The commissioning method, duration and cost boundary should be written into the contract to avoid later disagreement.
4. What to state in one enquiry
- Destination country and city, which determine climate and electrical standard
- Local voltage, frequency, number of phases, and whether a transformer is already installed
- Material name, initial moisture, target moisture and throughput
- Heat source available: electricity, steam, gas or biomass
- Workshop conditions: open air, high humidity, or explosion-proof requirements
- Unloading and lifting conditions, and whether assembly capability exists on site
Once these six items are confirmed, the uncertainty in an export project is largely removed.
